Sabriel is my favorite book, of all time. When I originally read Lirael, I was disappointed with being given new characters and didn't connect to the characters. Reading it again, years later, I love Lirael and The Dog more than I ever did before. Nix blends darkness and fantasy really well, there are some truly dark, haunting moments for the characters that are rounded out by light and adventure. Sameth, on the other hand. The son of Sabriel and Touchstone, is a but of bafook. I found myself agreeing with Mogget's insults of the young man often. Maybe that's intentional for his character's journey going forward, but it made his chapters a a nuisance as I waited to return to the titular character's adventures. I'm really glad I reread it after all this time because so many of the small details of Lirael's journey went over my head when I was in middle school. This book deals with depression, uncertainty, and fear in ways most "heroic" fantasy tales shy away from.
